Freenas 8 iscsi windows 2008 r2

Do the vdi's of the storage devices get created before creating the VM or during the VM setup? Thanks Art Atkinson. Man, do you able to format the disk with ntfs file system using freenas vol?

Great, this can be done with OpenFiler 2. Just for reference for another user as me, you need to get online the disk, initialize the disk, format the disk as basic mbr , and the get offline the disk in each server of the cluster, only when you get this steps the cluster don't compliant with warnings. Thanks for the post, very helpful.

Once the Freenas is up and running, I follow these steps. Once all the disks are added select Apply Changes to confirm changes. Again, it lacks memory or L2 caching so the incremental cost for something else Datacore if you really love windows makes this not worth it in my opinion.

The reason why I stress cache as soo important, is in a pure random writes 6 sata's in a raid 6 with 12GB of cache will destroy 6 x 15k SAS drives in a raid 10 with no cache. Its such a ridiculous force multiplier of performance and bang per buck that unless your using a SAN for nothing but large streaming writes or backups there is no reason not to invest in a solution with good cache.

While at some points for random reads with cache misses, and large streaming writes that burn the cache you do need to invest in the spindles to deliver performance, cache can significantly save you a lot of power, money, disk.

LSI and Intel have versions as well, and I'm sure some others are out there as well. I don't believe any of them do anything with writes just yet. Our lab runs on a pair of Datacores with raid 10 on 4 SATA disks, and has zero problems because of cache.

In order to do ARC safely though you need two controllers with separate cache. Some software like VMware view allow for tiered storage so you can use SSD's for read caching in a safe and consistent manner. Also the MaxIQ was a little expensive if I recall. Does anyone have links they can point me to on this cache you guys are talking about? Apparently I've fallen out of the loop and want to catch back up.

This is in the interim until we can afford Veeam. Any help is greatly appreciated! Add iSCSI disk and configure it as datastore.
