Essen of oceanography pdf

The book covers the fundamental geological, chemical, physical and biological processes in the ocean, with an emphasis on the north atlantic region.

The fifth edition of essentials of oceanography conveys garrison's enthusiasm for oceanography to non-science students taking the introductory course. It is a streamlined version of his bestselling oceanography text, but was created specifically to meet the needs of the shorter course. I participated in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl and used this textbook to help me prepare. I found this book very engaging. I finished the full textbook on my own free time.

The photographs are excellent! I majored in marine science in college and when I started as a freshman this book was actually the required text for one of my classes. I was happy to have already been through the entire book. I rented this textbook for my oceanography class. The book has a lot of good information and is very descriptive. I was surprised to find a lot of information on the sides of the pages that were linked but not directly related. With this book, bestselling authors Tom Garrison and Robert Ellis illustrate the interdisciplinary nature of marine science and give students the most dynamic and current introduction to oceanography available today.

Essentials offers current, balanced coverage of the geological, physical, biological, and ecological aspects of oceanography all the topics covered in the longer book but in less detail. Oceanography: The Geological, Chemical, Biological, and Physical Essentials of Oceanography guides students through the complexities of what lies beneath the ocean.

With an interdisciplinary approach and accessible writing style, the text is engaging for students of all majors. The Twelfth Edition discusses the ocean's biological, chemical, geological, and physical components for an in-depth understanding of this vast and elaborate topic. Complex concepts are made engaging with extensively revised art, new animations and the interdisciplinary connections that keep students interested and excited about the material.

Trujillo and Thurman balance rigor and accessibility, combining in-depth discussions of oceanographic concepts with highly visual and interactive study aids to demystify the science for the non-science student.

This unique combination has made Essentials of Oceanography the best-selling brief book—and one of the best-sellers overall—in oceanography. Students can carry this light-weight manual to class and use it to help synthesize their understanding of key concepts from the text. Features include Main Ideas, chapter summaries, Terms and Concepts to Remember, an interactive "Concept Check" section, review questions, and space for note-taking. A comprehensive study tool, the eCompanion assists in exam preparation, allows students to follow-along in class without the printed book or computer, and reinforces the concepts presented in the text.

Trujillo,Harold V. The Texty award recognizes written works for their excellence in the areas of content, presentation, appeal, and teachability. The publisher, Pearson Education, nominated the book for the award, and the textbook was critically reviewed by a panel of expert judges.

The chapter format of this textbook is designed for easy coverage of the material in a or week semester. For courses taught on a week quarter system, instructors may need to select those chapters that cover the topics and concepts of primary relevance to their course.

Chapters are self-contained and can thus be covered in any order. Following the introductory chapter Chapter 1 , which covers the general geography of the oceans; a historical perspective of oceanography; the method behind the process of science; and a discussion of the origin of Earth, the atmosphere, the oceans, and life itself , the four major academic disciplines of oceanography are represented in the following chapters:.

Geological oceanography Chapters 2 , 3 and 4 and Chapter Chemical oceanography Chapter 5 and Chapter Physical oceanography Chapters 6 , 7, 8 and 9. Biological oceanography Chapters 12 , 13, 14 and Interdisciplinary oceanography: Climate change Chapter We strongly believe that oceanography is at its best when it links together several scientific disciplines and shows how they are interrelated in the oceans.

Changes in this edition are designed to increase the readability, relevance, and appeal of this book. Major changes include the following:. The inclusion of an array of new SmartFigures and SmartTables, which provide a video explanation of difficult-to-understand oceanographic concepts and numerical data by an oceanography teaching expert.

Removal of all footnotes; pertinent information from previous footnotes is now contained within the body of the text. Updating of information throughout the text to include technological advances that have resulted in the modernization of oceanographic research and continue to shape the discipline today; for example, space-based oceanographic and atmospheric observations from NASA Earth-observing satellite missions.

An enhanced illustration package showcasing new photos, satellite images, and figures to make oceanographic topics more accessible, current, and engaging. The revision or updating of over half of existing figures and incorporating annotations and labels within key figures that direct student attention and help explain information in storyboard form; this research-proven technique helps students focus on the most relevant information, interpret complex art, and integrate written and visual information.

Standardization of the color scheme and labeling of all figures to make them more appealing and consistent throughout.
